RIP, Peter Parker

Yesterday afternoon Luke and Jaz captured a spider and spent a couple of hours collecting "softs" (leaves, grass, etc.) and making a home for the spider in a big bucket. They named the spider "Peter Parker." They doted on it and declared it "the best spider EVER!" Then, just before bed, they debated and eventually decided to let the spider go so that it could catch some flies.

Somehow, during the process of setting him free, they accidentally managed to squish Peter Parker. Lukas came running inside sobbing. He was just so devastated. I don't know if I've ever seen him so genuinely sad. Jaz was pretty upset too. My mom helped the boys bury the spider in our garden (they covered the spot with a heart rock), and then they dictated poems to her about the spider. Rest in peace, Peter Parker.

Spider, I love you.

Spider, you're fun.

I wish you would come back to our place.

You looked very cool.

4 eyes, black

And 3 little furs on your back.

Your legs were squished.
There were bubbles next to you.
We wanted to set you free . . .
But you were dead.
We will miss you.
